Japanese Style
Embroidery
Ando Hiroshige 1797-1858 was one of the most popular Japanese wood- block (ukiyo-e)
artists of his day. Below are my silk embroidery interpretations of his
work.
Background - The artist Hiroshige was born in 1797 into a low ranking samurai family
and called Ando Tokutaro. His father was a fire fighter at Edo (Tokyo)
Castle, and he studied at the Utagawa school under Utagawa Toyohiro.
Hiroshige graduated in 1812 after only one and a half years of apprenticeship and signed
his work Utagawa Hiroshige (Utagawa the school, and hiro part of his teachers
name).
Hiroshige produced many fine works and was particularly renown for his landscape
designs, during his lifetime produced an immense 5400 prints in all.
Hiroshige died of cholera on 12 October 1858.
All designs are painted by me and
hand embroidered on silk fabric and are my original work, I have hand dyed
many of the silk threads used on these projects making them totally
original. Click on design to enlarge
